Mise en Abyme at Black Mountain College

This durational, site-specific, and interactive installation premiered at the former Lake Eden campus of Black Mountain College for {Re}HAPPENING in April 2015.

The large format loom was installed, designed with elements of both back-strap and frame loom construction, inside the Round House, a small octagonal outbuilding which once hosted John Cage's classes and a slew of other Black Mountain College activities. The loom was warped almost the full height of the room, creating a dominant presence and inviting engagement. Participants were invited to learn the basics of weaving by contributing to the large collaborative work using somewhat non-traditional materials such as burlap, shredded fabric, and rope. The installation was heavily inspired by several Black Mountain College teachers and alumni, namely Ruth Asawa and Anni Albers.
